The World's Most Advanced Chip Is Not NVIDIA's or AMD's
Published September 29, 2026
The most advanced chip out of the lab is not a GPU. IonQ traps individual atoms above silicon, and NVIDIA is now its partner, not its rival.

NVIDIA and AMD GPUs are built to calculate numbers. IonQ's chip is built for something else entirely: it does not store a single answer, it holds every possibility at once. Both compute, but they are not in the same category and neither is going to replace the other. In September 2026, NVIDIA was in fact assembling a system connected directly to IonQ. So the better question is not which one is faster, but what the chip is actually for.
Individual Atoms Above Silicon
The raw material is not the transistor, it is the atom. IonQ traps individual ytterbium atoms above a silicon chip using electric fields, then drives each one with lasers. Each atom becomes a qubit, the basic unit of measurement in quantum computing.
The problem is that qubits cannot be printed the way transistors are. Atoms have to be trapped one at a time with lasers, which makes the process far slower and more expensive than ordinary chip fabrication. That is why quantum computers are not mass-market products yet.
IonQ has moved the other way and absorbed part of the semiconductor industry. In January 2026 it acquired chip fabricator SkyWater for $1.8 billion. The Superion 256 chip announced on 8 September 2026 is the first sixth-generation product built at that fab.
The Numbers Behind It
- 256 qubits in a single quantum processing unit, in the sixth-generation Superion 256
- 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity, a world record held alongside Oxford Ionics
- First chips fabricated at SkyWater, acquired for $1.8 billion in January 2026
- The first 256-qubit system was sold to the University of Cambridge in 2026
- 22 September 2026: the industry's first end-to-end real-time quantum error decoder, running on a single off-the-shelf CPU
- 23 September 2026: Superion 256 became the first quantum computer installed at NVIDIA's Accelerated Quantum Research Center in Boston
- First deliveries and the Boston installation are scheduled for 2027
Why NVIDIA Is A Partner, Not A Rival
This connection is what separates IonQ's story from the usual quantum-chip myths. On 23 September 2026, Superion 256 was selected as the first quantum system installed at NVIDIA's own research center in Boston. The chip is linked directly to a GB200 NVL72 rack over NVQLink networking, while the quantum and classical workload is orchestrated by CUDA-Q, NVIDIA's open-source software library.
NVIDIA is not treating its GPU as a competitor. The GPU still calculates classically, the quantum chip calculates on a different basis, and both can work on the same task. That combination is what is being tested, not a replacement.
What Is Still Far Away
Nothing here claims that quantum computers already beat classical ones at real problems. That 99.99% figure is about gate accuracy, not speed. Before quantum becomes useful, one logical qubit needs many physical qubits to correct its errors, and that ratio remains the field's biggest obstacle.
Scale is not close either. IonQ and Oxford Ionics both talk about targets in the millions of qubits, but that is a target, not a product shipping this year. What exists now is a 256-qubit system sold to laboratories, universities and research centres.
The Unanswered Part
How many physical qubits it takes to produce one genuinely useful logical qubit is still unanswered. Until that number drops sharply, systems like this will be bought by laboratories and research centres rather than by devices people carry around. What 2027 brings is an answer about appetite, not about technology.
