OpenAI engineer arrested by FBI for planting bug in office
On October 9, 2026, the FBI arrested Abdulrahman Alfozan, an OpenAI engineer since July 2025, for planting a recording device in an executive conference room at OpenAI's San Francisco office. The device was hidden in toilet paper and plugged into a USB port behind a TV.
Alfozan, a 35-year-old Saudi national, was charged with using or endeavoring to use an electronic, mechanical, or other device to intercept oral communications. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 5 years in prison and a 250,000 dollar fine.
The device was discovered on September 30 by OpenAI staff. CCTV showed Alfozan near the room multiple times before the device was found, despite having no authority to access or participate in meetings in that room.
Mechanism: how the bug was planted and found
Recording Device 1 was hidden in toilet paper and plugged into a USB port behind a TV in the executive conference room. The device was sophisticated: encryption, auto-record on speech detection, and remote access.
CCTV showed Alfozan near the room multiple times before the device was found. He had no authority to access or participate in meetings in that room.
Alfozan used OpenAI's internal productivity tool to search for building addresses, meeting room capacities, meeting calendars, and "leadership and exec" locations. He also used his wife's ChatGPT account (which shared identifiers with his own) to research how to build a recorder, customize Wi-Fi, improve audio, and encrypt SD cards.
On October 5, Alfozan entered the room and checked behind the TV (captured on CCTV). On the same day, he left a bag unattended in a different room. OpenAI security found the bag containing his wallet, ID, and Recording Device 2, similar to Device 1.
Saudi Gov Docs folder on iPhone
The most striking finding: the FBI found a folder called "Saudi Gov Docs" on Alfozan's iPhone on October 4. The US did not reveal the contents, but after accessing the folder, Alfozan used OpenAI's productivity agent to find "who from OpenAI could be suitable to attend a high level informal meeting with ministers in Saudi Arabia."
Alfozan also communicated via WhatsApp with "a member of the Saudi royal family" since 2025. Messages included "Saudi needs you more than the US!" and Alfozan replied "100." He also explored career opportunities in Saudi Arabia, including an AI venture being launched there.
Evidence: one-way ticket and wife already flown
Alfozan had already purchased a one-way ticket to Riyadh for himself, his wife, and their child on October 12. The ticket was paid for by the Saudi government. His wife and child flew to Doha on October 10 (one day after arrest), on business class tickets paid for by a Saudi military official.
Alfozan refused to leave OpenAI until his stock vested, but he explored other opportunities in Saudi. His OpenAI salary: 325,000 dollar base + 2.2 million dollar equity.
Impact: conference room used for meetings with government officials
What makes this serious: the conference room where the device was found was used for meetings with US government officials. The FBI stated that the defendant's conduct could pose a danger to the national security of the United States.
OpenAI confirmed: the device was sophisticated, designed to evade detection, with advanced encryption and audio monitoring. They also found evidence that Alfozan planned to place other listening devices elsewhere in the office.
OpenAI also stated: "At this time, there are no indications of this individual inappropriately accessing or exfiltrating model weights, source code, or customer data." The device was found before sensitive data leaked.
Context: AI company becomes espionage target
This incident shows that frontier AI companies (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind) have become espionage targets. Reasons: model weights and proprietary research worth billions of dollars, meetings with US government officials at OpenAI's office, strategic information about AI capabilities.
This is not the first case. But this is the first case involving a physical recording device in an AI company office, not cyber espionage.
Saudi Arabia is making a big AI push. They fund research, build data centers, and recruit talent from Silicon Valley. This incident shows that recruitment can mean more than just hiring.
Analysis: insider threat, not external hack
This is not an external hack. It is an insider threat: an insider who exploited physical access and internal knowledge. Two things make this hard to detect.
First, Alfozan used OpenAI's internal productivity tool to research rooms and meeting schedules. That tool was designed to help employees, not detect threats.
Second, Alfozan used his wife's ChatGPT account (not his own) to research how to build a recorder. This is a blind spot: security monitoring usually focuses on employee accounts, not family accounts.
Lesson: AI company security is not enough with firewalls and encryption. Physical security and insider threat monitoring are equally important. Physical recording devices are harder to detect than malware.
| Aspect | Before incident | After incident |
|---|---|---|
| Physical security | CCTV in corridors | CCTV in every meeting room |
| Insider threat monitoring | Focus on employee accounts | Including family accounts |
| Productivity tool audit | None | Access logs recorded |
| Device detection | Manual | Automatic (USB port monitoring) |
Unanswered question: was Alfozan working alone or part of a larger operation? The FBI is still investigating. But the evidence (WhatsApp with royal family, Saudi Gov Docs folder, ticket paid by Saudi military) points to Saudi government support.
Lesson learned: AI company security is not enough with firewalls and encryption. Physical security and insider threat monitoring are equally important. Physical recording devices are harder to detect than malware.
Context: AI company becomes espionage target (continued)
This incident shows that frontier AI companies (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind) have become espionage targets. Reasons: model weights and proprietary research worth billions of dollars, meetings with US government officials at OpenAI office, strategic information about AI capabilities.

Saudi Arabia is making a big AI push. They fund research, build data centers, and recruit talent from Silicon Valley. This incident shows that recruitment can mean more than just hiring.
The broader implication: AI companies need to rethink their security posture. Firewalls and encryption are not enough. Physical security, insider threat monitoring, and supply chain security are equally important. The Alfozan case is a wake-up call for the entire AI industry.
FBI masih menyelidiki. Tapi bukti menunjuk ke dukungan pemerintah Saudi.
Apa yang perlu diperhatikan
- Alfozan didakwa menyadap komunikasi lisan, maksimum 5 tahun penjara
- Device sophisticated: enkripsi, auto-record, remote access
- Tiket one-way ke Riyadh dibayar pemerintah Saudi
- OpenAI: tidak ada bukti exfiltrasi model weights, source code, atau customer data
- FBI: ongoing investigation, NSPM-11 (AI superiority)
- Alfozan dipecat, due back in court Nov 2026
