HEIC Converter
Convert HEIC and HEIF photos to JPG or PNG in your browser.
HEIC Converter on Loonix helps you convert HEIC photos from an iPhone to JPG or PNG in your browser. The file is never uploaded.
How to use
- Choose the HEIC file from your iPhone or its backup.
- Pick JPG or PNG as the output.
- Download the converted file and check the colour against the original.
Features and limitations
- Reads the file in the browser, so a photo from your own phone never leaves the device.
- Rejects JPEG and PNG before fetching the decoder, so the 1.9 MB download only happens for real HEIC files.
- Reads the real alpha channel instead of assuming it, and switches to PNG when transparency would otherwise be lost.
- Fetches the decoder on demand, so opening the tool costs nothing.
Limitation: Decodes through a browser build of libheif carrying an HEVC decoder, which is the codec inside every HEIC an iPhone produces. The decoder is about 1.9 MB and is fetched only when you convert something.
Use cases
- Upload a photo to a service that only accepts JPG.
- Free up space by keeping one JPEG copy instead of every HEIC original.
- Convert a batch of photos before sharing them on a platform that ignores HEIC.

Frequently asked questions
Usage, result, and limitation information for this tool.
- Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
- No. The file is read with the browser File API and decoded in memory. Nothing is sent to a server and no copy is kept.
- Does it work on Android and Windows?
- Yes. HEIC is the format, not the device that produces it, and the decoder runs in the browser. Safari is the least likely browser to reject a file it created itself.
- Why does JPEG sometimes come out bigger than the HEIC?
- HEIC uses HEVC, which is far more efficient at the same visual quality. Converting to JPEG means re-encoding with a codec that is less efficient, so the file grows.
- What happens to transparency?
- It is read from the file rather than assumed. If the decoded image has real transparency and you picked JPEG, the tool switches to PNG and tells you why.
- Why is there a 1.9 MB download?
- HEIC is HEVC video compression wrapped in a still image container, and a browser has no decoder for it built in. The decoder is fetched once, only when you convert, then cached by the browser.
